Grammar Patterns

-께서 honorific subject marker

The honorific version of 이/가, used when the subject is someone you respect, such as parents, grandparents, or elders.

할머니께서 오셨어요. — Grandmother came.
아버지께서 신문을 읽으세요. — My father is reading the newspaper.
-와/과 같이 together with (someone)

Attached to a noun to mean 'together with' that person. Use 와 after a vowel and 과 after a consonant; 같이 means 'together'.

친구와 같이 영화를 봤어요. — I watched a movie together with a friend.
부모님과 같이 살아요. — I live together with my parents.
-(으)시- honorific verb infix

Inserted into a verb or adjective stem to show respect toward the subject. Add 으시 after a consonant and 시 after a vowel, often paired with 께서.

어머니께서 책을 읽으세요. — My mother is reading a book.
할아버지께서는 일찍 주무세요. — Grandfather goes to sleep early.
