Grammar Patterns

V + 아/어 주세요 Polite request — 'Please do (for me)'

Attach -아/어 주세요 to a verb stem to politely ask someone to do something for your benefit. -아 주세요 follows stems with ㅏ/ㅗ vowels; -어 주세요 follows the rest. This is the go-to pattern for shop requests: discounts, wrapping, showing items.

조금만 깎아 주세요. — Please lower the price just a little.
Jogeumman kkkaa juseyo.
이거 보여 주세요. — Please show me this one.
Igeo boyeo juseyo.
따로 포장해 주세요. — Please wrap it separately.
Ttaro pojanghae juseyo.
V + 아/어도 돼요? Asking permission — 'May I...?'

Add -아/어도 돼요? to a verb stem to ask for permission. It literally means 'is it okay even if I (do)?' Use it to ask whether you may try something on, touch goods, or pay a certain way. Reply 네, 돼요 (yes, you may) or 안 돼요 (no, you may not).

이거 입어 봐도 돼요? — May I try this on?
Igeo ibeo bwado dwaeyo?
한번 만져 봐도 돼요? — May I touch it once?
Hanbeon manjyeo bwado dwaeyo?
카드로 내도 돼요? — May I pay by card?
Kadeuro naedo dwaeyo?
N + (이)나 / 쯤 Approximate quantity & price — 'about / around'

Use 쯤 after a number or amount to mean 'about/around' (만 원쯤 = about 10,000 won). Use (이)나 to express a surprisingly large quantity or 'as many as' (세 개나 = as many as three). Both are handy for negotiating amounts and budgets while shopping.

오천 원쯤 생각하고 있어요. — I'm thinking about 5,000 won.
Ocheon wonjjeum saenggakago isseoyo.
두 개에 만 원쯤 어때요? — How about around 10,000 won for two?
Du gae-e man wonjjeum eottaeyo?
세 개나 샀어요. — I bought as many as three.
Se gae-na sasseoyo.
A + 게 해 주세요 Bargaining softener — 'Make it (cheaper) for me'

Turn an adjective into an adverb with -게, then add 해 주세요 to ask the seller to 'make it' that way for you. 싸게 해 주세요 ('make it cheap') is the classic polite bargaining line at Korean markets — softer and friendlier than bluntly demanding a number.

좀 싸게 해 주세요. — Please make it a bit cheaper.
Jom ssage hae juseyo.
깨끗한 걸로 해 주세요. — Please make it a clean one (give me a clean one).
Kkkeutan geollo hae juseyo.
두 개 사면 싸게 해 주세요. — If I buy two, please make it cheaper.
Du gae samyeon ssage hae juseyo.
